ttF Fashion Staples Series Diary: Velvet Drama
I’ve been going to so many shows that even the thought of a night out is exhausting. But I promised my New York bestie at least one girl’s night. We were going to dinner first so wearing second skin velvet wasn’t the brightest choice but I figured at least it would keep me from over indulging. It ended up not mattering. Long story short, there was the drama at the restaurant and we ended eating at some less fancy joint in Times Square then ditching the clubs for girl’s talk in our pajamas. It’s too bad, too. I really liked my outfit and thought my brooch with bracelets combo was pretty clever. C’est la vie.

There’s something very Betsey Johnson about Velvet Breezy Top ($119). And that’s a good thing. I’ve always loved the way Betsey edges up feminine floral prints with black lace or studs. The ruffled hem on this blouse is adorable, but I’d also wear it tucked into a high waist jean or skirt.

There never was a woman like Gilda… until Milla Jovovich attended the American Museum of Natural History’s Museum Dance. The Ukranian beauty channeled Rita Hayworth in the 1946 classic, Gilda, from her rich velvet dress and soft curls right down to her sensual come-hither stare. Old Hollywood never looked so good.

I originally planned to do two outfits for my party: one glam and one playful. Two quickly turned into four after a very successful day of vintage shopping:
1. I found this dress at American Vintage in Los Feliz. It fit like a glove and considering both lamé and velvet are trendy for fall, I’ll probably be wearing it again (without the side ponytail, of course).

2. My friend and I originally went to Jet Rag for their $1 Sunday sale. Without our morning caffeine fix, we didn’t have nearly enough energy to dig through the piles of clothing outside the store. And thank goodness! Because inside was this fabulous velvet find. It was actually a dress but I cut off the frumpy calf-length skirt to make it into a Balmain-esque top. I definitely plan on wearing it with skinny jeans come fall.

3. I used to visit my grandparents in the Hamptons every summer. I think my grandfather bought me this sweatshirt when I was about eight. The shorts I actually bought before I planned my party. I have a slight neon obsession.

4. Considering neon is so trendy for spring, finding fluorescent was a breeze. The difficult part was getting my hands on a crimper. Luckily, a friend at work had kept hers from high school.

Designers showed velvet last fall but the fabric didn’t really take off. Hopefully, second time’s a charm.
