ttF Fashion Staples Series Diary: Cinco de Mayo
It’s not every day that you can wear a colorful poncho. But Cinco de Mayo is the perfect occasion. I bought this hand-embroidered piece last summer when I was in Guatemala for a wedding. Denim leggings and flat boots brought it from the local markets into the modern LA streets… Olvera Street to be exact. It’s a cool brick road downtown filled with Mexican eateries and little shops. You literally feel like you’re in another country. My friends and I had massive margaritas, enchiladas and quesadillas at El Paseo Inn, and then posed with a little pink-eared pup decked out in Mexican flag accessories. Obviously the dog reminded us that we were in LA, not Mexico.

I recently attended a friend’s wedding in Guatemala and was instantly intrigued by the local women’s clothing. Vibrant colors were hand-woven into unique patterns. Some even had intricate beading that would probably cost $200 if you bought it at a department store. The Guatemalan woman and girls wore the woven skirts tied at the waist with a colorful belt over patterned ponchos. Here, I’ve shown how you can take traditional garb from your vacation and blend it into your modern look back home. I picked up a few of the pieces at a market in Antigua (probably for way over price since I posses absolutely zero bargaining skills). Still, each item was much less than I would have paid in America and I was supporting the hardworking locals.
