Cooking and baking don’t come easily to me. That’s why I have to make up for my oven troubles with my decorating skills. I made these Fourth of July cupcakes last night for my Patriotic Potluck Party. I picked up Pilsbury Funfetti cake mix and frosting, red food coloring and blue cake decorating gel at the supermarket. Taking inspiration from Michael Kors‘ red, white and blue spring collection, I turned the cupcakes from average to so festive that people didn’t even notice they came from a box.
I had to cancel my July 4th weekend trip last minute, leaving me without plans to celebrate Independence Day. Since I already picked out an outfit, I decided to throw a pre-Fourth of July fiesta. I just sent out invitations today to my Patriotic Potluck Party. I asked guests to bring something to drink or eat that is red, white or blue. I’ll be serving red and white wine and blue cupcakes that I plan on making using food coloring. If I have time, I’ll pick up some flag toothpicks and stick them in the cheese plate. This red, white and blue theme is a quick and easy way to throw an All-American soiree.
I originally planned to do two outfits for my party: one glam and one playful. Two quickly turned into four after a very successful day of vintage shopping:
2. My friend and I originally went to Jet Rag for their $1 Sunday sale. Without our morning caffeine fix, we didn’t have nearly enough energy to dig through the piles of clothing outside the store. And thank goodness! Because inside was this fabulous velvet find. It was actually a dress but I cut off the frumpy calf-length skirt to make it into a Balmain-esque top. I definitely plan on wearing it with skinny jeans come fall. Vintage top, Forever 21 skirt, lia sophia earrings and bracelets, Stuart Weitzman pumps
3. I used to visit my grandparents in the Hamptons every summer. I think my grandfather bought me this sweatshirt when I was about eight. The shorts I actually bought before I planned my party. I have a slight neon obsession. Vintage sweatshirt, Hanes tank, vintage beads, Forever 21 shorts, Urban Outfitters legwarmers, Christian Lacroix sandals
4. Considering neon is so trendy for spring, finding fluorescent was a breeze. The difficult part was getting my hands on a crimper. Luckily, a friend at work had kept hers from high school. American Apparel dress, Forever 21 leggings, Gap Kids jean jacket, Claire’s flower barrette, lia sophia ring, vintage gloves, Forever 21 wedges
For my party last Saturday, I suggested people take inspiration from their favorite 80s movie or television show. Miami Vice, Punky Brewster, Desperately Seeking Susan, Dynasty, The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles were all represented. Which was your fave?
“Life is the most wonderful fairytale of all.” -designer Erin Fetherston on “Dinner by Design.”
As I was setting up for my birthday party Saturday night, Erin Fetherston was having an intimate dinner party on MTV’s House of Style (so happy the series is back is back, by the way).
In the clip above, the charming designer provides five tips to hosting a successful soiree. I got three out of five right:
Step 1: Choose a theme. Erin did fairytale. I did 80s.
Step 2: Set a dress code. Erin’s was stunning pieces from her fall collection, including those adorable animal mask hats. Mine was the 80s trend from fall fashion week, including House of Style’s #3 most wanted spring trend: Neon.
Fashion Week’s 80s flashback made me crave decadent dressing. So I decided to have an 80s themed party. To get inspired, I looked at photos of one of my favorite glamazons: Linda Evangelista.
After a full day of vintage shopping and a trip downtown to the American Apparel factory, I came up with three outfits. I know, it’s a little Lindsay Lohan to have costume changes but I just could not decide on my favorite!
Come back next week to see what my friends and I wore to Sydne’s Very 80s Birthday.
And side note: Look at the top photo of Linda in the striped skirt. Its from Vogue UK March 1987. It reads CHANGE. It’s so crazy how that could easily be an editorial today.
