ttF Fashion Staples Series Diary: In the Navy
I still didn’t feel that great when I woke up but I couldn’t show up to work in a sweatshirt and leggings. This cable knit sweater is as comfy as a house robe but doesn’t make me look like I rolled out of bed. And a pretty pair of heels always puts a smile on my face.

Today was my first day back in the office in 2010. So I wanted something colorful to kick off the year. I bought this dotted blouse at an E! wardrobe sale and it’s one of my go-to tops when I’m having a fat day. The baby doll style worked well to hide my holiday food and wine bloat.
The shoes, however, were not so helpful.
I ordered these pumps for about $10 after Christmas. They’re not a soft suede like my Steve Maddens but look great from far away. Everything was fine until I walked down to the courtyard with a friend to grab some lunch. Or should I say wobbled. The pain was unbearable! I’m hoping to fix the squished toes problem with a shoe pad to prevent my foot from sliding. If not, at least the heels were a steal.

ThinkThruFashion Tip:
Always have a pair of flats on hand the first time you wear a new pair of heels. I changed into my trusty London Soles when I returned to my desk. The outfit wasn’t as cute but my feet were beyond grateful.

I’m faced with choosing between looking a bit tarty at the office or a bit frumpy at my post-work event of the day. I usually choose the former. I’ll do anything not to look frumpy. Really though: what can you wear that’s appropriate for a business casual environment that’s also appropriate to interview a former supermodel for instance? —Andrea, New York
Finding an outfit that can transition from the office to a nighttime event isn’t as tricky as you think. It’s all about layering and accessorizing. I’ve created four day-to-night outfits using four versatile items from my wardrobe: a pencil skirt, jumpsuit, shift dress and sparkly top.
Look #1: The Pencil Skirt
Pencil skirts are sexy enough to wear at night, yet still appropriate for day when you’re dressed conservatively up top. For the office, I’ve covered a cami with a button-down shirt. I’ve also worn my necklace as a bracelet to avoid looking too sparkly at work. Before leaving for an event, I could take off the top layer and add the necklace.

Lady-like dresses are incredibly versatile. I’d wear this Calvin Klein Sleeveless Organza Contrast Sash Dress
($138 $39.99) with a cardigan, pumps and strand of pearls at the office then flirty heels and a sparkly statement necklace for an evening event. The contrasting blush and brown allows the dress to work for both morning and night and the ruching and relaxed fit makes it flattering for most body types.

The stylish women of Workchic asked me a few questions on my office style and what advice I have for aspiring fashionistas. They also had me play around in their Workchic faves section, which is a blast. You can sort the clothing and accessories by office dress code (business, business casual and casua) and save all your fave pieces to create the perfect office look. Starting today, Banana Republic is slashing 30% off a selection of work essentials. It’s the perfect time to stock up on classics that you can wear to the office year after year. The Sleek flap-pocket blazer ($150 $105) would look great over a pair of jeans on Casual Fridays. You can tuck the Silk ruffle geo-print top ($69.50 $48.50) into a pencil skirt for summer then wear under a suit come fall. The Sleek A-line skirt ($59 $41) is flattering for all body types and the Shawl cardigan ($89.50 $62.50) allows you to wear a maxi dress to work. And how cute does the sweater look with a little brooch? Very Michelle Obama-chic. The sale ends July 26th and is only online.
