ttF Fashion Diary: Volunteer Tuesday

ttF Fashion Staples Series Diary: Volunteer Tuesday
I recently started volunteering as a personal shopper at Dress for Success. The organization helps prepare women for the work place by providing them with career tips and clothing. When a woman is interviewing for a job, they come and get dressed in a suit. When they get the job, they can come back and get five office appropriate outfits.

Today was my second week as a personal shopper and I can’t even begin to describe what an incredibly rewarding experience it has been. It proves how important fashion is in helping a woman’s confidence. My client today came in a little nervous about her interview. When she saw herself in a cream suit with a black striped shell and pumps she smiled and told me she thinks she’s going to get the job. I hope she does so she can come back and I can dress her again!

As for me, I didn’t dress for success, I went for comfort. The West Coast headquarters is still fairly new, so there are boxes galore. When I wasn’t dressing a client, I helped organize, which isn’t an activity for a dress or suit. Jeans and classic loafers (which have been super popular with celebs recently) was a more sensible choice.

ttF Fashion Diary: Crochet Chic

ttF Fashion Staples Series Diary: Crochet Chic
Crochet is making a comeback this season. Normally, I’d wear the knit with more bohemian pieces, like ripped denim or maxi dresses. But this morning I tried the cardigan with my zebra staple and to my surprise really liked it! It gave a hippie feel to the polished pencil skirt and d’Orsay sandals. I’ve had this cardigan since I was about 10-years-old (it’s a child’s large) and I’m thrilled I never threw it away. You’ll be seeing it quite a few more times over the summer.

ttF Fashion Staples Series: Pencil and Chain
For the past two years, my go-to outfit for work has been a pencil skirt, a v-neck tee and some type of statement necklace. I talked about the versatile uniform when WorkChic profiled me in a Steal Her Style post. Today, I went with a ribbed red top and chain necklace that I found years ago at It’s a Wrap in Burbank. The store sells wardrobe from different TV shows and movies. I don’t know where this piece was worn but I had to have it.

Black pants and a white button-up often has the tendency to make you look like a waiter. But puff sleeves and a brooch—and a pop of orange at the wrist—take the outfit of catering territory.

ttF Daily Fave: Shop4Sparkles Watch Me Watches

Shop4Sparkles Watch Me WatchesMichelle Obama caused a color frenzy when she wore a purple Toywatch in Paris. At $195, the timepiece is certainly more affordable than her Cartier Tank Francaise. But Shop4Sparkles Watch Me Watches are only $25! They come in ten colors, which makes me wish I didn’t splurge on my orange Juicy Couture jelly watch last year. Oh well!

Vintage Ethnic Print Dress: Now & Later

tribal-now-later

Recently, I’ve been really inspired by all the tribal chic looks from Spring 2009 Fashion Week. So much so, that I was immediately drawn to this global print when helping a friend clean out her closet. The skirt was too big on me but the elastic waistband let me transform it into a dress. I created an outfit I can wear now to work and on vacation later this summer.

Now…
Juicy Couture ribbed shirt, Forever 21 belt, vintage necklace, Hogan boots

Later…
Beads from Africa, flower ring a friend got me at Bergdorfs, Steve Madden wedges
