ttF Fashion Staples Series Diary: Painting the Roses Red
I was planning to catch up on my sleep last night but a friend invited me to the opening of Plush and Bar 210 over at the Beverly Hilton. Of course, the minute I returned to Los Angeles the weather took a turn for the worse so I opted for long sleeves to keep warm. And thanks to Foot Petals Tip Toes, my red pumps weren’t nearly as painful as they were first time around. If you’re in Los Angles, the bar and lounge is definitely worth checking out. It’s a very cool venue and a nice change of scenery from Hollywood.

I was originally drawn to Forever 21’s floral ruffle chiffon tunic ($29.80) because of the print. The floral and dotted stripes felt very English countryside. They didn’t have my size so I tried a larger tunic and it was long enough to wear as a dress. It tied in back but I immediately pictured it with a belt. Here, I’ve styled in with three waist belts to create different daytime looks. I wore number one to the office the other week and received copious compliments.

Dear Forever 21,
I love your store. I shop there at least once a month to stock up on trendy and affordable clothing and accessories. But today you disappointed me. While browsing your new arrivals I discovered a pair of wicker cage pumps ($29.80) that look just like the Steve Madden platform sandals I bought last summer. Then I saw your bold floral woven skirt ($14.80). The pattern is nearly identical to the bright Aqua skirt I wore to my housewarming last spring. What gives? I understand everyone makes mistakes but if you’re going to take inspiration, please do it from new designs or dig up ideas from way back into the past, not 2008.
Love your loyal—but slightly upset—customer,

Tomorrow, I’m attending a cocktail party at LACMA for the West Coast premiere of Valentino: the Last Emperor. I don’t have time to change after work so I need something that is office and party appropriate.
Ideally, I’d want to wear a LBD and one of Valentino’s romantic floral spring handbags. But I don’t exactly have $1,500 laying around so I have to make due with what I already own.
I found these rose sandals from a few seasons ago to fill my flower fix. While I don’t usually wear red, I’m thinking in honor of Valentino I’ll go all out (it’s the couturier’s favorite color in case you didn’t know).

*Update: This morning I logged on to Red Carpet Fashion Awards and saw Michelle Obama on her way to London wearing a tweed Thakoon coat with a sparkly brooch. She inspired me to swap my statement necklace for a large gold brooch my grandmother gave me, which I pinned on my red dress. I added a few gold bangles and am much happier with the look. Thanks Mrs. O!
