ttF Fashion Diary: Watering Hole

ttF Fashion Staples Series Diary: Watering Hole
Being a Pisces, I’m always drawn to water. So much so, that every time I walk past our fountain at work I want to splash around for a photo shoot. Today, I finally wore shoes that could get wet. I didn’t splash too much since I didn’t want to ruin my silk skirt but I love the water background with the zebra print. The only bad part is I set a bad example for a little boy who was drawn to the fountain as well. I’m pretty sure his dad wanted to kill me.

Shopping The Way We Wore’s Bi-Annual Sale

The Way We Wore Bi-Annual SaleToday I stopped by The Way We Wore’s Bi-Annual Sale. For those of you not familiar with the store, it’s one the best vintage shops in Los AngelesDita von Teese and Debi Mazar recently hosted a charity auction there.  Every summer, the store puts their bottom floor on sale for 50% off. Their inventory ranges from white 1920s dresses that are so delicate I wanted to frame one and hang it in my bedroom to over-the-top 80s garb, like a Jean Paul Gautier black velvet mini with fabulously gaudy gold straps that luckily was nowhere near my size.

Speaking of size, today’s shopping trip reminded me that a number is just a number. I picked up this Emanuel Ungaro zebra print skirt ($125 $75) that was two sizes larger than I normally wear—but fits me like a glove. That’s why my rule of thumb when vintage shopping is if you like it, try it. You can always tailor it later.

Fall 2009 Paris Fashion Week Trends: Still Loving… Polka Dots

polkadotsThere were polka dots for everyone at Paris Fashion Week: Emanuel Ungaro provided retro black and white and psychedelic multi-colored dots; Balenciaga draped spotted silk; Loewe cut out dots on his sweaters; Christian Dior had playful large circles; and Maison Martin Margiela went avante garde.

Fall 2009 Paris Fashion Week Trends: Hesitant About… Exposed Midriff

exposed-midriff

I didn’t mind when Carrie Bradshaw skipped around NYC in a bandeau top. But no offense, I just really don’t feel like seeing everyone’s stomach when I step out to get a green tea latte. Bare midriffs should stay in Britney Spears’ Circus.

Fall 2009 Paris Fashion Week Trends: Hesitant About… Drop Waist

drop-waist

I am not a fan of the drop waist. My hips are not a feature that I want to exaggerate. Anyone who is hourglass or pear shape probably feels the same. Tall, thin models, square shapes, and inverted triangles, on the other hand, look fabulous in a drop waist because it adds curves.

This is also a great trend for women with short waists. It’s just not a good trend for me. It’s too bad, because I’m in love with Dries Van Noten’s print (bottom right). If only the waistline was, well, at the waist.

Fall 2009 Paris Fashion Week Trends: Hesitant About… Micro Minis

micro-miniI love mini dresses. I’m wearing one right now in fact—with opaque tights of course, since I’m at work. But micro minis can be a little much, especially when the dress has a chest-exposing sweetheart neckline. Isabel Marant tried to make her animal print micro mini wearable by styling it with a blazer. It worked on Erin Wasson, but who has thighs like that?
