Jimmy Choo founder Tamara Mellon is no doubt a stunning woman. But I wasn’t particularly drawn to the one-shoulder leather Jimmy Choo for H&M dress she wore to the collection’s launch party in Los Angeles.

But while waiting to checkout the other week at the H&M on Sunset, my friend came over and said she saw the dress in my size in the dressing room. I figured I might as well try it on (what else was I going to do in the longest wait ever to pay?). It fit like a glove so I had to get it. Unfortunately, it’s going back. While styling this shoot, I notice a hole on the side seaming. That should not happen to a dress that’s over 200 bucks. But I hope I find a similar one soon because I really do love it!

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

1. Jimmy Choo for H&M necklace, DKNY tights, Robert Clergerie boots

2. Hyde belt, vintage pearls worn as bracelet, Jimmy Choo sandals

3. H&M belt, Urban Outfitters tights, lia sophia and Disney Couture bangles, Jimmy Choo for H&M sandals

Shopping for a cocktail dress is a cinch when you’re in your 20s and 30s. Department stores cater to this age group with their sequins, ruffles and curve-hugging silhouettes. But as you start hitting your 40s and 50s, these styles no longer seem age appropriate. Still, you don’t want to look matronly. There lies the rub. Recently, while helping my mother shop for a conservatively elegant dress, I discovered just how difficult it is to find the perfect medium.

After sifting through designs that were too young, too matronly, too fancy and too revealing, we finally discovered one that was just right by Carmen Marc Valvo.

I was reminded of the difficult shopping experience this week when two stars stepped out in cobalt blue dresses. The color of Kate Walsh’s Marchesa was gorgeous on the 42-year-old star but the babydoll style seemed better suited for someone like Selena Gomez.

Then there was Eva Longoria Parker, who wore an Ina Soltani dress that made her look more like she was 64 instead of just 34.

Since eDressMe is currently running a 15% off holiday dresses sale through 11/25, plus free shipping on all orders through 11/21, I figured I’d take a look to see what dresses they have that fall into this not too young but not too matronly medium. Here are some options I came up with:

Remember when Jennifer Hudson’s character, Louise, in Sex and the City introduced her boss to Bag, Borrow or Steal, now called Avelle? Well if Louise makes it back for the sequel, she might just teach Carrie Bradshaw about Rent the Runway.

Instead of handbags, the new site loans out high fashion dresses for as little as $50-$200 for four nights. They’re even willing to send along an additional size of your dress at no extra cost, plus a styling kit with double-sided tape, bra strap adjusters and deodorant stain removers.

I wish they had this service around when I was in school. Could you imagine how cool it would have been to be able to wear Proenza Schouler to prom?

Although, a high school student might not necessarily get accepted to the invite-only rental service. I’ve been on vacay for the past five days so I just got around to signing up and I’m on a wait list, since Rent the Runway tries to limit the number of memberships.

As amazing as the service seems, part of me is hesitant. I remember when I borrowed a Hervé Léger bandage dress from a showroom one night. Since it was a sample, it had been worn over and over, and the bust area was so stretched out that I had to do some major last minute fixes with safety pins. Granted, Rent the Runway has damage insurance so hopefully the dresses are in pristine condition when they arrive. I’m looking forward to seeing for myself when I receive my membership, hopefully in time for the party-filled holiday season.

When I wore Look #1, I used Bristol 6’s styling tape to secure the front so I didn’t have to worry about my bra showing at the office.

I really need to go to American Apparel and buy one of their Sweetheart Two-Toned Mini Dresses ($46). I was resisting for a while after seeing so many girls in Los Angeles pairing them with booties but the trend isn’t going anywhere and I’m obsessed with the cobalt/navy version. Maybe I can convince my Forever21Report partner to take a trip with me down to American Apparel’s warehouse to see if I can get the dress with a discount.
