ttF Fashion Staples Series Diary: Alice in FIDM
Tonight, I attended the opening night gala of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Costume Exhibition at FIDM. To celebrate the release of the film on Blu-ray and DVD, Disney put together a display of Colleen Atwood’s glorious costumes, Alice-inspired clothing and jewelry, as well as couture created by FIDM grads.
It was the perfect occasion to finally wear the dress I bought last summer after seeing preview pics of the Tim Burton flick. I wasn’t comfortable with cleavage for the event, so I turned it into a yoke style by removing the straps and layering my lace top underneath. Funky plastic peep-toes brought the outfit into Wonderland.
The event was adorable, from the thematic topiary bushes to the finger sandwiches and Mad Hatter ice tea served in tea cups. The highlight, obviously, was the fashion show hosted by Project Runway alumn Nick Verreos. If you follow me on Twitter, you would have seen the student creations inspired by characters including the Tweedle twins, the Cheshire cat and the Red Queen.
After the show, I went inside with Jen and my friend Mark from WWD to get a sneak peek at the exhibition. If you’re in Los Angeles, you can check it out from May 27-September 30. They’re also having cute events over the summer, including a tea party and a costume contest. Maybe I’ll tie a ribbon in my hair and return in my baby blue ensemble.

What should I be for Halloween? That’s the question I’ve been hearing for the past week. If you’re like me you’ve already been thinking about what to wear this year. But if you’re costume clueless, here’s some inspiration straight off the runways of New York, Milan and Paris. Hit up your local vintage shop, dig through your closet, break out the glue gun and have fun!

Cropped Pants
I was hesitant about cropped pants for fall. I just can’t imagine exposing my ankles when temperatures drop. But the style is perfect for showing off a new pair of shoes for spring. Already Pretty’s Sally McGraw showed just how versatile an ankle-length pant can be in a guest 1 Item, Different Looks post.

Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith were my two favorite Charlie’s Angels. So, like most people. I was saddened to learn this morning that the blonde feathered-haired, blue-eyed beauty had passed away from cancer at 62. I took a moment to look back at her fabulous 70s fashion and realized that many of her looks mirror the clothing seen on the spring runways. So, I put together a little photo tribute to Farrah’s style:

I cracked up when I read that “‘fat’ is no longer the ultimate fashion insult” in The Sunday Times. The article was about Kate Moss’ new figure. Supposedly, now that the supermodel is no longer a waif, she is “fat.” And since she’s one of the biggest trendsetters, especially in the UK, “fat” is in.
The rest of the article wasn’t as comedic. It talked about “lean times make for fatter tums.” I literally was just having this conversation with a friend who recently started a very expensive raw food diet. My argument was it’s much easier to be thin when you have money. It’s common sense: low-cal sashimi and a cucumber sunomono is the same price as three foot-longs from Subway. But maybe eating the foot-longs isn’t a bad thing. According to a study done by Dr. Lefi Nelson at NYU, during times of financial crisis, men prefer women with a little meat on them.
My real life experience proved this to be true. I had to go on this medication last year that made me very skinny. All my girlfriends would tell me how great I looked. I was elated at first. I found I could wear just about anything I wanted—except for my favorite D&G bustier dresses. I no longer had the curves to fill them out. These lacking curves were a major turn off for men.
My best guy friend told me I looked like a little boy and when I went out I found my fuller-figured friend would get all the attention that I used to receive. Super skinny just wasn’t sexy.
Hollywood is starting to realize this as well. I just came across an article today in another British media outlet, Daily Mail, discussing the new celebrity trend: pillow faces i.e. plump, chubby cheeks. It’s another common sense notion. Youthful women have soft round cheeks. As you age, the cheeks get hollow. To look young again, you need to restore the fat in your cheeks. I’m petrified of needles. So I’d prefer to have a little fat on me so I don’t have to inject it in my face in a few years. Plus, if “fat is in” I’ll just look that much better in the latest fashions.
