White Button-Down Shirts
Perhaps it’s the Gap effect. You know, how the All-American brand had designers re-work the classic white button-down? Well it looks like other designers want to participate in Gap Design Editions. My favorite version of the white button-down actually wasn’t on the runway. It was on a girl sitting near me at Hervé Léger’s show who paired her bandage skirt with an oversized white button-down and studded booties. It was the perfect mix of edgy, classic and sexy.

Polka dots never seem to fall out of fashion. The print is just as popular for fall as it was this past spring. And since black and white will always be a classic color combo, these versatile polka dot dresses will last you year after year. Wear them with a cardigan and pumps for the office, flats for the weekend and a sexy pair of heels and statement jewelry for a night on the town.

Models Alexa Chung and Hilary Rhoda celebrated “Burberry Day” in New York wearing the exact same blue Burberry dress. But the way they styled it shows the versatility of a feminine sheath. It can look edgy and cool when paired with a rolled-up blazer, studded belt and platform booties. Most hipsters have this combo down pat. But I’m more of a Charlotte than a Carrie so I prefer Hilary’s classic look: a thin black belt and a fabulous pair of Manolos.

I’m a huge fan of personalized gifts. There’s something about monograms and engraving that shows you put in a little extra thought. One of my favorite baby presents right now is from Ralph Lauren’s Create Your Own Collection. Perhaps it’s my preppy side coming out but I think it’s fun to send a newborn their very first polo. There is of course the classic shirt (which was a huge hit with my stepsister in Chicago), as well as dresses, shortalls and coveralls. They come in a variety of colors and you can choose from four different fonts for the monogram. And my go-to girl for sales, Lilah Delilah, says that if you order today, you’ll get 30% off! Jennifer Love Hewitt, who played Audrey Hepburn in 2000’s TV movie, The Audrey Hepburn Story, celebrated her big 3-0 last month by dressing like Holly Golightly and literally having breakfast at Tiffany’s.
In Paris, designers also seemed to be inspired by the 1961 classic. My favorite interpretation was Lanvin’s sculpted LBD. What was your fave?

As discounts continue to deepen, it’s getting harder to pass up a good deal. But just because a dress is 80% off doesn’t mean you should buy it. Especially if that dress has a plaid print, bubble hem, built in chain-necklace or any other trendy feature from fall.
It’s fine if an item was popular, just as long as it’s a classic. Take for instance, Diane von Furstenberg’s Benny dress. Celebrities loved this dress last year. And so did I. I could only find it in my size in black, otherwise I would have bought it in every other color. The silhouette is timeless and the seaming is very flattering. But the best part is, the dress is seasonless.
For winter, I’ve shown it paired with a tweed jacket, sheer tights, classic pumps and a sparkly pendant. Come spring, I’ll wear it with a trendy geometric statement necklace and zipper platforms.
