ttF Fashion Staples Series Diary: All Tied Up
When I lived in London for a year, my favorite place to shop was Portobello Road. The market had so many goodies, like this cameo brooch I bought my mother for Christmas. Five years later I learn she doesn’t like cameos! So I’ve taken my present back and put it to good use. I’ve worn this sheer top many ways but the pin really makes it special.

I really should have made my Vince sweater a fashion staple. I keep wearing the comfy cashmere over and over again. Tonight, I switched it up by layering a shirt underneath and pinning a cameo brooch on the ruffle collar to go to sushi with my mother. If you’re ever in Northern San Diego, you must try Samurai. Their Chef Special hand roll is to die for. We continued our tradition of going to frozen yogurt after dinner and the warm sweater certainly came in handy again as I had a cold cup of Red Velvet. Major yum.

April is a little tricky. The first week is supposed to be cold and rainy. Then, comes the sunshine. Then I go to Miami, which means extreme heat. So I had to pick staples that could work in the office, on the beach and on a chilly spring day. Here’s the breakdown of the 6 Fashion Staples I’ll be wearing at least 6 Different times for the next 30 days:

1. Flower Brooch (H&M)
I bought this brooch while I was at New York Fashion Week. I was probably inspired by the massive Sex and the City 2 ads of Carrie Bradshaw lining 5th Avenue. The coral puts a little spring cheer into any outfit and I like how it can be used as both a brooch and a hair accessory.

2. Lavender Mini Dress (American Apparel)
Lavender is my favorite color trend for spring. This cotton spandex jersey dress is so versatile. You can dress it up or down and even wear it as a bodysuit tucked into a skirt.

3. Studded Wrap Belt (Forever 21)
The minute I saw Victoria Beckham in a studded wrap belt in a Harper’s Bazaar editorial I fell in love with the look. She belted her Balenciaga dress with Linea Pelle but I went a less expensive route and bought a Forever 21 double wrap belt in a large and made it into a triple wrap. This was over a year ago and I still can’t get enough of the accessory.

4. Black Bracelets (lia sophia)
Black jewelry is huge for spring and I’ve already gotten plenty of use out of these and black and crystal stretch pieces. They add an edgy glam feel to a basic outfit.

5. Black Pencil Skirt (Theory)
There’s not much more to say about the black pencil skirt except it’s a classic that every woman should own.

6. Black Dressy Wedges (Steve Madden)
Wedges are huge for spring. I bought these Cielo Wedges ($129.95 $89.95) last year and am excited to start wearing them. They have a bit of a retro feel and are certainly more comfortable than a 4-inch stiletto.

ttF Fashion Staples Series Month #2 Summary: February Softness

ttF Fashion Staples Series Month #2: February Softness
This was a very hard month. Since there were only 28 days, I had to make sure to incorporate more than one Fashion Staple into many of my outfits. In total, I wore each of the 6 items at least 6 times. Although the outfit I created to kick off February was black and gray, the majority of my looks are either pink, red or green (my favorite colors to pair with gray).

Here’s the breakdown for February…

ttF Fashion Staples Series Diary: Remembering Alexander McQueen
Before I got dressed this morning I saw pictures of Naomi Campbell, Daphne Guinness and Kate Moss attending Alexander McQueen’s funeral in London. It inspired me to switch up my outfit for the day. Instead of the pastel tweed I planned to wear over my gray dress, I tightly belted a houndstooth jacket to achieve a similar New Look feel as the late designer’s fall collection. I topped off with an unexpected pop of pink to remember all the brightness McQueen contributed to the fashion world.

I was a girlie-girl growing up—and that certainly has not changed. I still feel the need to twirl every time I wear a full skirt. Looking at these pictures, I realize how much better the skirt looks with all that volume. I wish petticoats would make a comeback so I don’t have to spin in circles.
