If you didn’t have time to pick up one of Urban Outfitter’s retro Lakers women’s t-shirts, don’t worry. You can still show your support for the Los Angeles Lakers tonight as they beat the Orlando Magic in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. All you need are purple and gold accessories.
For those of you who follow me on Twitter, you know that last week I wore a yellow cuff and purple wrap bracelet with a black blazer for work. Try bangles, circular pendants that remind you of a basketball or a horseshoe charm on a purple string for good luck. If you’re a DIY type, tie-dye a scarf or wrap purple and yellow ribbon around a headband. Accessories are easiest way to support a team—and the most practical, too, since you can wear them even when it’s not basketball season.

Everyone always talks about Michelle Obama being this generation’s Jackie O. Yes, JFK’s wife wore multi-strand pearl necklaces but when I see Mrs. O using her double strand of pearls to create different looks I think of Princess Diana. The royal beauty had just about every type of pearl necklace imaginable and wore them all around the world: a choker in Australia, jeweled in the United States, a classic single strand in Canada, twisted in Italy, gray in Japan and all of the above in England. After her scandalous divorce, the Princess of Wales stopped dressing matchy-matchy and displayed a fashion confidence very similar to Michelle Obama’s. Like our first lady, Lady Di also showed she had the “right to bare arms.” Above, you can see her wearing an oversized pearl necklace with a sleeveless sheath. Sound familiar?

Katy Perry has figured out a way to make swine flu fashionable: a blinged out pig ring. Okay, so it’s a little weird making light of an epidemic but at least the singer thought outside of the box.
Just out of curiosity, I did a quick search and found an equally sparkly oinker accessory on sale… for $164.99. Etsy had a three little piggies version for only $12.25 and there was an 18kt gold piece that I’d actually consider wearing. But I’ll only pay $2,5000 for it when pigs fly.

Today we learned that Michelle Obama is the first person, other than Oprah, to be featured on the cover of O, The Oprah Magazine. If you google “michelle obama plastic belt” there are already pages and pages of people questioning our First Lady’s accessory choice. But I love it—and not just because it’s on Michelle Obama.
I wanted a clear belt after seeing Lucy Liu at the Independent Spirit Awards. I searched the Internet for 20 minutes but had no luck finding one. Today, I discovered one at French Connection, but it has colored piping. I’m not worried about finding one, though. Now that Michelle Obama wore plastic, you know we’ll be seeing plenty in the next couple of months—just look what happened to lemongrass after the inauguration!

*Update: A reader at Red Carpet Fashion Awards just found this Steven by Steve Madden clear belt ($17.90). I’m going to order it before it sells out. I’ll let you know how it is when it arrives!
*Update2: Don’t bother ordering the Steve Madden belt. My order was just canceled because they actually didn’t have the merchandise. Such a tease.
Milan Fashion Week has ended. I’ll be breaking down the trends later today but first I wanted to share with you my favorite accessory from the shows: the statement necklaces at Marni.
The statement necklaces in New York were tame in comparison to designer Consuelo Castiglioni’s jewels. Granted, I doubt I’ll be able to afford any of the neckpieces but they definitely serve as inspiration. If I dig through my closet and hit up a few vintage stores, I’m confident I can get a similar look for fall. Stay tuned…

From New York to Paris, designers accessorized their models with stacks of bangles. The bracelets are much chunkier than last year’s trend. Chloe Sevigny showed off Louis Vuitton’s tribal chic bangles over New Year’s, leading me to find inexpensive options to get her look. But I still haven’t had a chance to go to Forever 21. So, last night I decided to try to make due with what is already in my jewelry chest.
I discovered bracelets I haven’t worn for years! I’m embarrassed to say it, but sometimes you have to be told something is en vogue to want to wear it again. I was specifically inspired by the way Marc Jacobs mixed ethnic pieces with decadent gold for the Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton runway.
After about 30 minutes of trying different combinations, this what I cam up with: (Side note: You might not want to spend as long as I did trying on bracelets. It took two hours for the red to go away on my wrists!)
Oh, and my dog, Bunny, liked playing with the bangles too!
