ttF Fashion Staples Series Diary: Paisley Pop
I’m not really a scarf person. I’ll use them for functional purposes in colder weather and I have a leopard silk scarf that I’ll occasionally wear as a skirt. But this morning, I was staring at my reflection in the mirror and thought something was missing. I had the whole feminine/masculine contrast going on with a silk blouse and pinstripe vest. And a Twisted Silver necklace, which sadly didn’t turn out in pictures (I’ll have to take more later), provided a slightly rugged element.
All of a sudden, I had a fashion epiphany. I took out one of my grandmother’s scarves and added a much needed pop of color to my neutral outfit. I continued the tribute to grandma with her diamond and gold ring. How cool is this piece of jewelry?

Chunky Bangles
Last spring’s chunky bangle trend is continuing into 2010. Plastic has replaced wood as the most popular bracelet but the accessories were still shown stacked. Good thing I’ve expanded my collection in the past year!

The great thing about big bags is you can carry everything you need. The worst part is the larger the purse is, the harder it is to find anything you need. Linea Pelle solves this problem with their Purse Light Key Chain ($30). You hook it onto your keys or purse and voila! You can instantly see inside that vast handbag. Sure, you could carry around a mini flashlight with you that cost 5 bucks at CVS. But I doubt it would come in pretty hot pink or silver leather. This item also makes a useful and affordable gift.
Agate is a variety of quartz that has been used for centuries as power stone, one that has calming and healing properties. But when designer Frida Giannini used the gemstone to accessorize the Gucci Spring 2009 runway (pictured in the center) it became an instant fashion trend. There are a plethora of agate options available now, from bedazzled bracelets to simple pendants that you can thread using your own chain or leather cord. Luckily, the crystal isn’t too expensive, so you don’t need to spend a fortune to jump on this jewelry trend.

Michelle Obama’s plastic Sonia Rykiel belt made yet another appearance this week when the first lady spoke at the Business and Nonprofit Philanthropy Summit. Gotta love how she recylces those belts! But I must say I’m surprised that more designers have not knocked off this accessory. I’ve seen many plastic belts over the past few months, but they all have colored piping. I really love the way the way a plastic belt cinches the waist without breaking up the body so I just ordered a clear jelly belt strap from eBay and I’m going to attempt a DIY project. I’ll let you know how it goes!
