I recently discovered organic vodka at the Loomstate for Target launch in Venice. I’m still a Ketel One girl but the eco-friendly spirit intrigued me. To learn more, I emailed my favorite mixologist, Natalie Bovis-Nelsen aka The Liquid Muse. Here’s what she had to say:
“I’ve been working on drinks with Square One vodka since its launch about 3 years ago. It is made from organic grain, the label is printed with soy ink—and it is even a woman-owned business, which makes it extra cool to me. I am excited about the cucumber flavor because it doesn’t smell or taste artificial. Its freshness lends itself to quality cocktails using organic ingredients.”
Natalie gave me a sneak peak of one of the recipes from The Liquid Muse Sustainable Sips(R) eco-friendly cocktail program. Sip this refreshing cooler drink and you might just feel like you’re in Miami with me this weekend. Speaking of which, I need to jet. Have a great Friday everyone. Cheers!
Mother Earth Mojito

1 heaping tablespoon organic cucumber; peeled, seeded & diced
1 heaping tablespoon of diced organic lime; rind on
1 heaping teaspoon raw sugar or 1 ounce raw sugar simple syrup
4-5 torn mint leaves
1½ ounces Square One Organic Vodka, cucumber flavor
Organic Italian lemon spritzer (or lemon-flavored soda water)
Muddle cucumber, sugar and mint leaves in tall glass. Pour in vodka. Fill with ice. Top with soda. Garnish with a sprig of mint or lime wheel.

I’m strictly an Essie girl when it comes to nail polish—aside from when I travel and use Nic Sticks (they’re less likely to leak in my carry on). But I’m considering broadening my horizons after watching my girl Daneen of Spoiled Pretty talk about some of the hottest eco-beauty buys. One product in particular especially caught my eye: Zoya nail polish. One, because it’s non-toxic and two, because I’m going to Miami this weekend so I’m loving everything and anything that comes in bright colors. Zoya has over 300 shades! Check out what Daneen has to say about the line below, and then head over to Spoiled Pretty for your chance to win the polish and more goodies in her Mother (Earth) of all Giveaways.
“Zoya Ooh-La-La and La-Di-Da Nail Polish Collections: Zoya Nail Polish is the brainchild of Zoya Reyzis who, as a pregnant aesthetician and salon owner in 1984, realized the need for a healthier and more durable solution. Zoya was the first nail polish brand to remove toxic ingredients such as toluene, camphor, formaldehyde and DBP (dibutyl phthalate) from its formulations -making it a safe and healthy polish for nailphiles everywhere, particularly expectant women. Available in over 300 fashion forward shades, this award-winning polish is the longest-wearing natural nail lacquer.”

Last night, I attended a charity auction hosted by Dita von Teese and Debi Mazur at The Way We Wore. Doris Raymond, the owner of the fabulous vintage shop, invited fashion designers to repurpose outdated clothing as part of an Earth Pledge initiative. It was best event I went to this year. The concept itself is so current. You don’t need to spend a lot to look good. You just need to be creative. As Debi Mazur said last night, “It’s okay not to have the latest fashions.” Of course, most of us aren’t as talented as Lotta Stensson or Kevan Hall. I’ll admit I can’t even sew a button. But with creativity I can make a dress into a skirt and vice versa. It’s amazing what a cardigan, a belt or even a simple piece of statement jewelry can do to a piece. I’ve been trying to show this through pictures in my blog, but Debi was very blunt about getting the point across. “Embrace your fat ass, your saggy whatever,” she said. “Own your wardrobe.”
So next time you look into your closet and and are bored by everything you own, take a step back and think, how can I rework this piece? What can I do to spice things up a bit? Sure, it will take some brainpower. But it will save you money and let you express your individuality.
To see more of the reworked vintage pieces, and to bid on the one-of-a-kind creations, head over to www.ebay.com/thewaywewore.

People say print magazines are dying. But if they died right now, Elle and Vanity Fair would go out with a bang. When I received my May issue of Elle I was floured by the cover of Drew Barrymore splashing in the water like an angelic mermaid in Dolce & Gabbana. The editorial spread, shot by Alexi Hay and styled by Joe Zee, was just as impressive. I actually have the picture above pinned on my wall at work.
Then yesterday, as I’m catching up on all my bookmarked blogs, I find Emily Blunt posing in my absolute favorite dress from Dior’s Spring Haute Couture collection. Michael Roberts photographed the Marie Antoinette-esque shots for a Vanity Fair feature on couture. I don’t know which I like more, the stunning photographs or the inspiring quote below:
“Couture is a promise to the future from the past: There will be entrances and orchestras again, carriages and candelabra again, parties and seasons again. There will be glamour again. Throughout the history of civilization, doom, doldrums, depression, and disaster have descended to paint the town gray. But they will also recede, leaving little but a shudder. What is left, what abides, is beauty.” -A. A. Gill in Vanity Fair May 2009.
